SAVAGE, Will (1874 - 1953)
SPURLOCK, Bob (1880 - 1953)Two Colored Men Perish As Raging Flames Destroy East End Dwelling
Two McMinnville colored citizens – lifelong friends – burned to death Monday morning when raging flames destroyed the Cedar Street dwelling owned by one of them. Fatally burned as fire destroyed the five-room structure were, Bob Spurlock, 73, who resided in the house, and Will Savage, 79, a resident of Shelbyville Road. Both colored men were well known in McMinnville. The close friendship of the pair probably cost Savage his life. He was visiting his friend when the fire occurred and both were trapped in the blazing inferno.
The blaze was discovered by Spurlock’s wife, Sally Spurlock, who had gone into the back yard of the home for wood. She noticed the flames breaking through the structure and before aid could be summoned the dwelling was a mass of flames. She told patrolman Doc Grissom that she made a futile effort to rescue her husband. Both Spurlock and Savage were presumably sitting in a rear bedroom of the house at the time the fire broke out. Indications point to the fact that Spurlock made an effort to reach the front of the house, since his body was found in the front bedroom immediately forward of the other bedroom he had reached a window in the room before apparently being overcome by smoke or fire. Savage’s body was slumped to the floor, in a sitting position, in the rear bedroom. Both bodies were badly burned.
Spurlock’s wife made an effort to turn in the fire call from the burning dwelling, however just as connection with the phone operator was made, and the word “fire” heard, the phone went out of service, therefore there was a slight delay in locating the blaze. Firemen proceeded to Cedar street where they found the house afire all over. Dense smoke apparently caused suffocation of the two men trapped in the dwelling. Engine Co’s 1 and 2 of the fire department under the direction of Capt H.D. Mitchell and Cecil Justice, with 9 volunteer firemen answered the call. After the burning structure had been cooled, the bodies were removed from the building by Elvin Spangler, Hugh D. Paris and Comer Zwingle of High Funeral Home, assisted by firemen.
Both men were natives and lifelong residents of McMinnville. Spurlock was born July 15, 1880, the son of Tom and Lydia Ramsey Spurlock. He is survived by his wife Sally Spurlock, McMinnville. One son Harry Spurlock, McMinnville, and three daughters, Katherine Biles, McMinnville; Susie Mae Johnson and Mattie Bell Womack, Cleveland, Ohio.
Savage had been employed as a gardener and yard attendant for several McMinnville families in recent years. He was married to Nora Martin, who preceded him in death September 8, 1937. He is survived by five sons, Sherman, Thomas, Fred and Henry Savage, McMinnville, and Haskell Savage, Chattanooga.
Double funeral services were held for the two men Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock at East End Drive Church of Christ. Ben M. Bates officiated and burial for Spurlock took place at Riverside cemetery. Savage was buried at Hopewell cemetery, near Oakland. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for both services.Southern Standard, McMinnville, TN. Thurs, 12 Nov 1953, p. 1.
