Alvin C. Simmons, 64, died Friday at his Madson residence. He was the husband of Betty Simmons and a son of the late Willie Lee Simons and of Mrs. Mary Ann Simmons of McMinnville. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by daughters Pam Allen of Cedarville, Ohio and Rita Cobb of Dyersburg, sister Wanda Earle of Huntsville, Ala., and four grandchildren. Tony Simmons, 45, dies suddenly
Knoxville resident and Warren County native Anthony (Tony) Simmons, 45, died suddenly March 24 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. A financial consultant with Merrill Lynch and a member of the Baptist church, he was the son of Harriet Martin Simmons of McMinnville and the late George W. Simmons. He is survived by his wife Elaine Smith Simmons; one daughter, Melissa Simmons of Knoxville; and two sisters, Joan Mealy of McMinnville and Lila Pearson of Bradenton, Fla. Services will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Danny Griffith officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery. Route 9 resident and Chattanooga native Arthur Litton (Bud) Simmons, 60, died unexpectedly Nov. 3 at River Park Hospital's emergency room. A machinist for the DeZurik Corp. and a member of the Mt. Leo Church of Christ, he was the son of Litton and Lona Mayfield Simmons and was preceded in death by one sister, Ann Shawls. He is survived by his wife, Zelma B. Simmons; one daughter, Pam Bullard of McMinnville; four sons, Mike, Tony and Billy Simmons of McMinnvilleand Roy Simmons of Smithville; one sister, Betty Crawford of McMinnville; five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Kingsport resident Beatrice (Bea) Rogers Simmons, 65, died Jan. 29 at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center after an extended illness. A member of the Blountville Church of Christ and the Democratic Women's Club of Sullivan County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Nannie Rogers and was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. She is survived by three daughters, Yvonne Snapp of Kingsport, Beverly Overby of Gray and Roslyn Justice of Blountville; four sisters, Sally Cox, Azalee McGee and Gladys Rogers, all of McMinnville and Clara Haijar of Worcester, Mass.; two brothers, Haskell Rogers of Cincinnati and Joe Rogers of Maryville; and three grand- children. Self-employed farmer Carl B. Simmons, 64, died Nov. 18 at River Park Hospital following a one-year illness. Mr. Simmons was unmarried and a native of White County. He was the son of Orville and Mattie Kuhn Simmons and a resident of the Rock Island community. Survivors include uncles, Roy Kuhn of Rock Island and Sam Carson Myers of Indiana; aunts, Edna Smith of Doyle and Thelma Worley of Michigan. Several cousins also survive. Retired ordained Baptist minister and mechanic Charlie Elbert Simmons, 80-year-old resident of 103 Creamery Street, died in St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville, at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. He had been in failing health for the past two years. A native of this county and member of the Freidnship Baptist Church, he was a Mason for 50 years and a member of Lodge 452. He was married to the former Louise Elizabeth York and a son of the late Marion A. and Lila Savage Simmons. In addition to his widow, he is survived by two sons and two daughters, Wayne and Carl D. Simmons, Mrs. Helen Turner and Mrs. Faye Lusk, all of McMinnville. He is also survived by a brother, George W. Simmons of McMinnville, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. James Rutledge and Bransford England will conduct services in McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel, the funeral home in charge, at 1 p.m. Saturday. Funeral Rites For C.L Simmons Held Thursday
Funeral services for Charlie Lee Simmons, resident of the 14th District, were conducted Thursday at 2 pm. at the Salem Church of Christ. Rufe Higgins, minister of East End Church of Christ, and John W. High conducted the rites, and burial was in the Salem Cemetery. Mr. Simmons died at the Medical Clinic, here Tuesday at 9:45 a.m. following an illness of two weeks. He was 86 years of age. The deceased was a native of Van Buren County. He was born June 28, 1871, and was a son of George and Mary Bright Simmons. He married Carol Patterson, who survives. Earlier he was married to Gallic Boren, deceased. Mr. Simmons was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors are his wife, a son, Elbert Simmons, Detroit, and a daughter, Mrs. J.W. Cantrell, McMinnville. In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandparents, Lanny and Barbara Wanamaker of McMinnville; paternal grandparents, Carl and Linda Simmons of McMinnville; maternal great-grandparents, B.F. and Wilma Yates of McMinnville and Martha Wanamaker of McMinnville; and paternal great-grandmother, Mary Simmons. A homemaker, she was the daughter of John and Eula Blazer Porter and was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus E. Simmons, in 1988. She is survived by three daughters, Wilma McGee of Springfield, Catherine Rogers of Madison and Joyce Renfron of Goodlettsville; two sons, Benjamin Houston Lefevers (sic) of Springfield and George Almond Lafevers (sic) of Hermitage; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ill for the past four years, Mrs. Nettie Lou Simmons, 81-year-old resident of Route 2, died at 8:29 p.m. Monday in River Park Hospital. A member of Shellsford Baptist Church and native of Van Buren County, she was the wife of Thomas Henry Simmons and a daughter of the late Lawson and Elizabeth Seals Mooneyham. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and four daughters, Claude Simmons of Route 9, Tommy Simmons of Route 1, Quebeck, Susie Horn of Route 6, Jessie Horn of Route 2, Ethel McCormick of Rock Island and Bessie Hale of McMinnville. She is also survived by sisters Vadie Bates of McMinnville, Pearl Mooneyham of Spencer, 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grand children. McMinnville resident and Warren County native Velma Lois Simmons, 49, died March 25 at River Park Hospital after an extended illness. A teller at Mid-South Bank and a member of Christian Fellowship Church, she was the daughter of Nettie Lee Pendleton Marino of McMinnville and the late Rufus Elmore Simmons. In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Angela Herman of McMinnville; two sisters, Rebecca Hale and Angela Sharon Frances, both of McMinnville; two brothers, Sterling Simmons and John David Marino, both of McMinnville; her step-father, Robert Marino of McMinnville; step-mother, Florence Simmons of Springfield; and one granddaughter, Tiffany Nicholas of McMinnville. Mill Worker Meets Accidental Death Early Wednesday
A McMinnville lumber mill employee met accidental death early Wednesday morning when fellow workers found him lying beside his machine only minutes after he had checked in for the day's work. Dead on arrival at a local hospital was Frank Simons, 54, an employee of the Cumberland Lumber and Manufacturing Company who was listed by the company as a cut-off saw operator at the mill located near the Fairgrounds. According to officials of the company, Mr. Simons, who had been an employee for several months, reported for work at 6:48 a.m. and had gone into the mill to assume his regular duties. Other mill employees reporting for work went into the plant and found the man in an unconscious condition near his machine. The machine had not been put in operation for the day. Mystery surrounds the death of the man since there were no reported eye witnessed to the actual incident. Doctors, who performed the autopsy on the body Wednesday afternoon, described the man's death as from accidental causes. A native of Van Buren County, Frank Simons was a son of Tom Simons and Lillian Johnson Simons and was married to Miss Pearl Fults, who survives. He had resided in the West Riverside community for some time. Mr. Simons was a member of the Church of God. Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the chapel of High Funeral Home. Rev. Harry O. Katz, Church of God pastor, officiated and burial was in Riverside cemetery. Mr. Simons is survived by his wife; his mother; two daughters Mrs. Albert Taylor, McMinnville, and Mrs. Bell Johnson, Hitchcox, Tenn., and two sister, Mrs. Herbert Bates, McMinnville, and Miss Lora Simons, Birmingham, Ala. Rites Friday For George C. Simons
Funeral services for George C. Simons, 75, retired Van Buren county farmer, were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Laurel Creek church. Revs. W. J. Thompson and Raymond Patterson officiated and burial was in Laurel Creek cemetery. Mr. Simons died Thursday morning at 12:40 o'clock at Faulkner Springs hospital, following an illness of four weeks. A native of Van Buren county, he was born December 20, 1877 to Mr. Simons and Eva Russell Simons and he was married to Miss Bonnie E. Grissom, who survives. He was a member of the Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, George C. Simons, Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Robert Bryant and Mrs. William Slatton and one sister, Mrs. Sam Walling, all of Van Buren county. Joseph Taylor Simons, 78, retired painter and carpenter, died at his home, 202 Creamery street, Friday afternoon at 1:52 o'clock, following an illness of two weeks. He had been in failing health for several months. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at Crain Hill Church of Christ. John W. High officiated and burial was in Crain Hill cemetery. Mr. Simons, native of Van Buren county, was born September 8, 1874. His parents were Joseph Simons and Vina Mayfield Simons and he was married January 5, 1898 to Miss Susie Keener. She survives. Mr. Simons was a member of the Baptist church. Besides his wife, his is survived by three sons, Andrew, Ben, and Aubrey Simons, all of McMinnville; four daughters, Mrs. L.C. Clendenon, Murfreesboro, Mrs. George Vaughn, Mrs. Lloyd Boles and Mrs. Will Howard Cripps, all of McMinnville. Also one brother, Jim Simons, Spencer. Mrs. D. E. Slagle, 53, member of a well known McMinnville family, died Tuesday evening at 6:50 o'clock at Faulkner Spring's hospital. She had been ill three years. Funeral rites will be conducted today (Thursday) at 2 o'clock at the Magness Memorial Baptist Church. The pastor, Rev. H. Curtis Erwin, will officiate and burial will be in Mt. View cemetery. Mrs. Slagle was the daughter of the late Rev. A.H. Huff and Mrs. Helen Huff and she was married to Mr. Slagle who preceded her in death several years ago. Until she became ill, Mrs. Slagle was employed in the clerical department of the Railroad and Public Utilities Commission's offices in Nashville and she was a member of Woodmont Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Howard Butler, Nashville; her mother; two sisters, Mrs. C. Grey Elkins and Mrs. Cora Meador, McMinnville; three brothers, A.C. Huff, Wichita Falls, Texas, B.L. Ruby Slatton Dies Saturday
Mrs. Ruby Smith Slatton, 72 year-old resident of 503 Morrison Street, who had been ill for two years, was pronounced dead on arrival at River Park Hospital at 4 p.m. Saturday.
A native of Woodbury and widow of J.C. Slatton Sr., who preceded her in death in 1964, she was a member of Westwood Church of Christ.
Mrs. Slatton was a daughter of the late Robert and Patty Fugitt Smith.
Survivors include two sons and two daughters, J.C. Slatton, Jr., and Tom Bragg; Mrs. Henry Boyd and Mrs. Edwin Hammer, all of McMinnville; four sisters and a brother, Mrs. June Lefever, Miss Ina Smith, and Mrs. Mary Thomas, Woodbury; Mrs. Katherine Cabrera, Washington, D.C., and Paul Smith, also of Woodbury; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Brothers James Vandiver and Harold Jones conducted funeral rites in High's Chapel at 2 p.m. Monday, interment following in Mt. View Cemetery.
