SPAIN, Wilma Boyd  (circa 1927-1987)

Wilma Spain
            Mrs. Wilma Gladys Spain, 60-year-old resident of 227 Woodland Drive, died of an extended illness in Vanderbilt Hospital, Nashville, at 9 a.m. Sunday.  Employed at Century Electric, the Warren County native was a member of the Church of Christ and daughter of the late Arzie Clifton and Josie Maxwell Boyd.  She is survived by a son and two daughters, Bobby Spain of Elizabethtown, Nadine Walker of McMinnville, and Joan Underhill of Lake Charles, La.  She is also survived by a brother and three sisters, Dwain Boyd, Winona Powers and Bonita Boyd, all of McMinnville Dortha Miller of Nashville, and eight grandchildren.  The body will be in state at High Funeral Home parlors at 11 a.m. Monday.  With interment scheduled in Mt. View Cemetery, James Bond and Ernest Laws will conduct services in the funeral home chapel at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

SPAKES, Eddy Oscar  (1886-1952)

Eddy Oscar Spakes, White county lumberman, died at his home near Quebeck Friday morning at 9:40 o’clock.  He had been ill 18 months and was 65.  Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Jericho Church of Christ. Wayne McMillen officiated and burial was in the Jericho cemetery.  A native of White county, Mr. Spakes was born November 30, 1886. He was a son of Silas Spakes and Mary Denny Spakes and he was married to Miss Nellie Foster, who survives. Mr. Spakes was a member of the
Baptist church. Survivors, in addition to his wife, are four sons, C.L. Spakes, Chattanooga, Clyde and Joe Lee Spakes, Quebeck, and Lotell Spakes, Morristown; five daughters, Mrs. Ed Sparkman, Spencer, Mrs. Ray Phifer, and Mrs. Lloyd Duiton, Quebeck, Mrs. Robert Silsby, St. Joe, California, and Mrs. W. H. Jackson, Alcoa. Also one brother, Herman Spakes, Quebeck.  Arrangements were by High Funeral Home.

SPARKMAN, Bernice Martin  (1915-1952)

Bernice M. Sparkman, 36, Veteran Of World War II, Dies In Michigan Hospital
Bernice Martin Sparkman, 36, veteran of World War II, died in the Veterans Administration hospital, Dearborn, Mich., December 19, following and illness of a year.  Funeral services were held December 23 at Bethlehem Cumberland Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m.  Rev. Smith of Cannon county officiated and burial was Bethlehem cemetery.  A native of Warren county, Mr. Sparkman was born in May, 1915. He was a son of Isaac Robert Sparkman and Hattie Belle Scott Sparkman and served with the U. S. Army in the Pacific during World War II.  Since his discharge from military service, he had been employed in Michigan as a welder.  Survivors,in addition to his mother,  include his wife, Mrs. Wyolene Sparkman, Dearborn, Mich.; three brothers, L.B. Sparkman, Robert Sparkman and Collidge Sparkman, and two sisters, Mrs. Pansy Dudley and Mrs. Judith Mullins, all of Detroit, Mich.  High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

SPARKMAN, Cooper Landis  (1894-1952)

White Countian Dies In Hospital
            Cooper Landis Sparkman of the Quebeck community of White county, died in a Murfreesboro hospital Tuesday, April 8, following an extended illness. He was 68. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Quebeck Baptist Church and burial was in Preston Heights cemetery. Mr. Sparkman, born in White county, October 11, 1894, was a son of Temple Sparkman and Permelia Hunter Sparkman and he was married to Miss Pearl Hill. She Survives. Mr. Sparkman was a veteran of World War I. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Charlie Moore, Quebeck, and Mrs. A.B. Ford, Washington, D.C.

SPARKMAN, Dovie Ada  (circa 1910 - 1986)

Dovie Sparkman
            Dovie Ada Sparkman, 76, succumbed to a four year illness Monday at 3 p.m. in River Park Hospital.  Mrs. Sparkman was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.  She was a daughter of the late Lucian and Etta Boren Green.  The Warren County native was the widow of the late William L. Sparkman who died in 1979.  Surviving are a son, Bill Sparkman of McMinnville, a daughter, Mrs. Glenn Stoner of Green Hill, three brothers, Everette Green of McMinnville, Elbert Green of Gath, Joe Green of Green Hill, and four sisters, Mrs. Ophia Flander and Mrs. Dollie Greene, both of Green Hill, Mrs. Valata Fletcher of St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Hattie Argo of McMinnville.  Five grandchildren also survive.  The service is scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m. in McMinnville Funeral Home with Archie Bonexter to officiate.  Burial will follow in Webb Cemetery.

SPARKMAN, Emma Frances  (circa 1920 - 1994)

Gath resident Emma Sparkman dies
          Gath community resident and Coffee County native Emma Frances Sparkman, 74, died July 24 at Reliance Health Care Center after an extended illness.  A retired health care provider and a member of Temple Baptist Church, she was the daughter of the late Will and Eliza Gertrude Underwood Skillings and was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo Vernice Sparkman; one son, William Vernice Sparkman and one grandson, Victor J. Young.  She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Keathley and Brenda Dodson, both of McMinnville and Shirley Sue Clark of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Martha Magalene Murphy of McMinnville; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Tollison officiating.  Burial will follow at Webb Cemetery on Bluff Springs Road.  McMinnville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SPARKMAN, Florence  (????-1956)

Florence Sparkman Funeral Service Today
                      Funeral services for Mrs. Florence Sparkman will be held at two o'clock this afternoon at High's Chapel and burial in the Hash cemetery at Rock Island, John W. High officiating. Mrs. Sparkman, a native of Van Buren county, married Frank Sparkman who preceded her in death October 5, 1950. Surviving are one step-son. Haskel Sparkman, Doyle; one step-daughter, Mrs. Herbert Deaton, Doyle: three brothers, Will Rowland, Doyle, Henry Rowland, Rock Island, and Burr Rowland, Walling; four sisters, Mrs. Will Seamons and Mrs. Will Johnson both of Bone Cave, and Carol Neal and Miss Martha Rowland both of Rock Island; and two grandchildren. High Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

SPARKMAN, Gladys C.  (circa 1902 - 1993)

Doyle resident, Gladys Sparkman, dies
Route 1, Doyle resident and Warren County native Gladys C. Sparkman, 91, died Aug 13 at Middle Tennesee Health Care Center after an extended illness.  A homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of Dow and Mattie Davis Chandler and was preceded in death by her husband, L.D. Sparkman in 1981.  She is survived by two daughters, Grace Kell of Rock Island and Louise Kell of Doyle; one sister, Livina Green of Walling; three brothers, Arnold and Conrad Chandler, both of Doyle and Andrew Chandler of Rock Island; three grandchildren, Joann and David Kell and Melissa Darnbush; and two great-grandchildren.  Services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at High's Chapel with Garvin Haley and Carl Gene Crawford officiating.  Burial will follow t Mount View Cemetery.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SPARKMAN, Ira Lee  (1879 - 1953)

Ira Lee Sparkman Buried Friday
Funeral services for Ira Lee Sparkman, 74, were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at Bethlehem Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Charles Powell and Lloyd Noble officiated and burial was in Bethlehem cemetery.  Mr. Sparkman, retired farmer. Died unexpectedly at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lonnie Pinegar, at Yager, Thursday morning at 10 o’clock.  A native of Warren county, Mr. Sparkman was born March 11,1879. His parents were Andrew Sparkman and Laura Gribble Sparkman and he was married to Miss Mattie Turner December 20, 1908. She died August 21, 1944. Mr. Sparkman was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Survivors, in addition to Mrs. Pinegar, are two sisters, Mrs. Frank Glenn, McMinnville, and Mrs. Ida Stuckel, Sacramento, Calif. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

SPARKMAN, Kathy  (circa 1947 - 1993)

Kathy Sparkman, 46 dies suddenly
           McMinnville resident and Warren County native Kathy Sparkman, 46, died suddenly April 1 at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.  An inspector at Genesco for 18 years and a member of the Class of 1964 at Central High School, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Stella Bussell Duncan.  She is survived by her husband, Roy Sparkman; one son, Donnie Sparkman of McMinnville; one daughter, Diane Bouldin of McMinnville; one sister, Patricia Crutcher of McMinnville; one brother, Freddie Duncan of McMinnville; and two grandchildren.  Services will be held tody at 2 p.m. at High's with Ronnie Powell and Vernon Joines officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lela Ward Sparkman, 75, of Route 1, Doyle, died Tuesday in Atlanta, Ga., following an extended illness. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in High's Chapel with Bob Winger officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Sparta. A native of Van Buren County, Mrs. Sparkman was married to the late Gilford Dudley Sparkman. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church in Sparta. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Paul H. Wright of Atlanta, and two grandsons. High's Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

SPARKMAN, Lou Dora  (1875 - 1953)

Mrs. Sparkman’s Rites At McElroy Cemetery
        Funeral rites for Mrs. Lou Dora Sparkman, widow of John Sparkman, were held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at McElroy in Van Buren county.  J. Ross Redden officiated and burial was in McElroy cemetery.  Mrs. Sparkman, 77, died at her home at Bone Cave Sunday at 9:12 a.m. following a four days’ illness. She was born in Van Buren County July 14, 1875. Her husband died in 1916. She was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include one son, Clyde Sparkman, Bone Cave, and one daughter, Mrs. J. H. Watley, Huntsville, Alabama, one sister, Mrs. Betty Martin, Van Buren county, and two brothers, Willie Steakley, Van Buren county and Harvey Head, Nashville.

SPARKMAN, Nannie Chambers  (1884-1952)

Mrs. Nannie Chambers Sparkman, 67, widow of J. M. Sparkman, died Saturday morning at 9:45 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Paul Phifer, Sparta Road.  She had been in ill health for four years.  Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at East End Church of Christ. offficiating was Rufe Higgins, minister of Chestnut Grove Church of Christ, and John W. High and burial was in Mt. View cemetery.  Mrs. Sparkman was a native of Van Buren county, born December 2, 1884. She was a daughter of Allen Chambers and Artamicha Tosh Chambers and for the past several years had made her home with her daughter here.  Her husband died March 11.   Mrs. Sparkman was a member of the Church of Christ.  Besides her daughter, she is survived by three sons, Lee Sparkman, Hopkinsville, Ky.; Charles Sparkman, McMinnville, and Gordon Sparkman, Plymouth, Mich.; seven brothers, C.E. Chambers, Dayton, Max Elbert Chambers, Old Hickory, Elijah, Dan, Gaston, Elisha and Allen Chamberrs, Dallas, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Cantrell, Dibrell, Mrs. Jonah Hale, Spencer, and Mrs. Mary Hash, Dallas.  High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

SPARKMAN, Thomas Duke  (1922-1974)

Coronary Is Fatal To Tom Sparkman

          Thomas Duke (Tom) Sparkman, widely-known educator, coach and former star athlete, died of a heart attack at his 206 Ben Lomand Drive residence at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.  Mr. Sparkman, 48, was principal of Dibrell School in this county.  A U.S. Naval veteran of World War II and Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a native of White County and was married to the former Martha Jean Phillips, who survives.  They were married in 1950.  A member of the First United Methodist Church here, he was a son of the late James Cooper and Emma Sparkman.  Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, and a daughter, Jimmy and John Sparkman and Miss Milla Sparkman, of this city; two brothers, Joe Sparkman, Chattanooga, and the Rev. Temp Sparkman, Kansas City, Mo., and four sisters, Mrs. Pat Carpenter and Miss Cooper Sparkman, Old Hickory, Mrs. Frances Lutz, Nashville, and Mrs. Ruth Slatton, Sparta.
           Mr. Sparkman attended White County High School and following World War II graduated from Middle Tennessee State University, class of 1949.  He earned his Master of Arts degree in December of 1972.  He was head football coach at McMinnville City High School for seven years, also coaching basketball, and was head football coach at Warren County Senior High School for two years, originating the annual "Pioneer Day" celebration.  A member of White County High School's outstanding 1942-43 conference and district championship basketball team, Mr. Sparkman was to have been one of the players honored at basketball homecoming when the Warriors hosted the Pioneers at Sparta Friday night.
          With the Rev. John B. Sessoms, Jr., officiating, funeral services were held in the First United Methodist Church at 3 p.m. Friday, interment being in Mt. View Cemetery.  High's, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

SPURLOCK, Joseph Finis  (1908 - 1953)

Rites Tuesday For Joe F. Spurlock, 44
               Funeral services for Joseph Finis (Joe Billy) Spurlock, 44, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the colored Church of Christ with Calvin Dowell officiating.  Burial was in the Riverside cemetery.  Spurlock, a well known colored resident, died in his living quarters at county jail, where he was employed as janitor by Sheriff Eldridge Youngblood, Sunday morning at 4 o'clock.  His death was attributed to a heart attack.  A native of Warren county, Spurlock was born April 5, 1908.  He was a son of William Spurlock and Mary Nelling Spurlock and he is survived by two brothers, Frank and Walter Spurlock, McMinnville; seven sisters, Harriet Brown, Lydia Henegar, Ruby Smith, Allie Ramsey, Maggie Matthews and Jessie Thurman, all of McMinnville, and Annie Bell Ramsey, Painesville, Ohio.  Arrangements were by High's.

STANLEY, Mary Rose Bennett  (circa 1918-1992)

Mary Stanley
          McMinnville resident and Warren County native Mary Rose Stanley, 74, died April 10 at River Park Hospital, after an extended illness.  A homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ, she was the daughter of William and Alice Khimes Bennett and was preceded in death by her husband, John Kendrick Stanley, in 1975.  She is survived by two sons, Carl and Larry Stanley, both of McMinnville; two daughters, Betty Scott and Carolyn Dunn, both of McMinnville; one brother David Lee Bennett of Detroit; two sisters, Agnes Caven and  Lula Teufel, both of McMinnville; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.  Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at High's Chapel with Perry Cotham, Harold Jones and Dr. Davis Glenn officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

STARKEY, Andrew   (1880 - 1953)  (Colored)

Funeral Services for Andrew Starkey, colored resident of the ninth district, are tentatively set for today (Thursday) at Vervilla. The hour will be announced by High Funeral Home. Burial will be in Vervilla cemetery.  The deceased passed away at his home near Morrison Friday evening at 6:30 o’clock, following a week’s illness. He was 73. A native of Warren county, the colored farmer was born January 6, 1880. He was a son of James Starkey and Annie Brown Starkey and he was married to Icie Bonner in 1902. She died March 23, 1950. Starkey included five sons, George and Grady Starkey, Detroit, Mich., Howard Starkey, Cincinnati, Ohio, Jack Starkey, Morrison, and Thurman Starkey, Chicago, Ill.; four daughters, Sadie Solomon, Morrison, Rosena Lusk, Rock Island, Mollie Mitchell, Detroit, and Ruby Hawkins, Nashville. Also two sisters, Emma Starkey, Morrison, and Minnie White, Detroit.

STEPP, Ann Moore  (circa 1917-1986)

Warren County native Mrs. Ann M. Stepp, a resident of Orlando, Fla since 1963, died of an extended illness Monday in the John Milton Nursing Home, Kissimme, Fla. at the age of 69.  The widow of Errett Stepp who preceded her in death in 1963, she was a member of the Baptist Church and a daughter of the late Tom and Betty Davis Moore.  She is survived by a daughter and two sons, Melba Unger of Orlando, Gibb Stepp of Kissimmee and Jack Stepp of Sanford, Fla.  She is also survived by three sisters, Louise Tuck of McMinnville, Lorrain Hill of Orlando, Betty Woody of Nashville, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  Visitation will be from 3 to 10 p.m. Thursday.  Garvin Haley will conduct services in High Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday.  Interment will follow in Mr. View Cemetery.

STEPP, James H. (Jim)  (circa 1875-1952)

Rites For James Stepp Held At Shiloh Cemetery
        James H. (Jim) Stepp, brother of the late F.M. Stepp of McMinnville, died at his home in Donelson, near Nashville, Thursday morning at 9 o'clock. He was 77.  Funeral services were held at the chapel of Pettus and Owen Funeral Home in Nashville Saturday morning and the body was brought to Shiloh in the 7th district for burial that afternoon. A prayer service was held at the grave prior to the burial.  Mr. Stepp was a native of Warren county and was well known here. He was a member of one of the county's prominent families and it was his father who contributed the land for the Shiloh church and cemetery. He had lived near Nashville for a number of years.  Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ora Payne Stepp, Donelson; a daughter, two sons, a step-daughter, stepson and a brother, Mack Stepp, Tracy City. Also eleven grandchildren.
