Zion Methodist Church Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock. Rev. Bill Brown of Nashville officiated and burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery. Tobitt was pronounced dead upon arrival at General Hospital, Nashville, about 11 p.m. Saturday, after he had been shot while fleeing
from police through a vacant lot near N. First and Spring Sts., some thirty minutes earlier. Tobitt was felled by a bullet from a revolver of motorcycle officer J. P. Gill, who told a Nashville newspaper that Tobitt broke away from him after being placed under arrest. The Nashville Tennessean said that Lt. B. M. Duke, a Nashville officer, had placed Tobitt under arrest on a charge of driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor and that as the slain man was being walked to a nearby police cruiser he broke away from Patrolman Gill and fled. Tobitt, the Tennessean continued, ran around a service station and through a field. When it was apparent that he was getting away from officers, patrolman Gill fired once. "I shot low for his legs," the paper quoted the officer as saying, "but he stumbled as I shot and fell." General hospital attendants said the bullet struck the lower extremities of Tobitt's back and lodged in the abdomen. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. TURNER, Thomas Clark (1914 - 1960)
Shot Gun Blast Fired By Stepson Fatal To Turner
Tom C. Turner, 45-year old McMinnville trucker, was fatally wounded by a shot gun blast at his Swann Street home here Tuesday night. Charged in connection with the shooting is Thomas Howard Grissom, about 28, Turner's step-son. Investigating officers stated that the shooting occured at about 7:20 o'clock. They added that Turner had been drinking prior to his death. Sheriff Hugh Cantrell and Assistant Chief of Police, James Cathey, who, with members of their staffs, investigated, gave this version of the incidents preceding the shooting, as related by members of the family. Mrs. Turner said the victim returned home drunk, and began abusing members of the family. Sheriff Cantrell quoted them as stating that they had threatened to call the sheriff, and that Turner had loaded his .20 gauge shot gun and placed it on the bed, apparently "to take care of him" when he arrived. Cathey said Mrs. Turner also told the officers her husband had threatened "to kill all of us". According to the reports, Turner then threw a chair, which barely missed his aged mother-in-law, Mrs. Grissom, who was seated in the living room. After throwing the chair, he began beating his daughter-in-law (Thomas Howard Grissom's wife). She grabbed him around the lower part of the body, trying to ward off the blows. During the resulting fracus, the stepson grabbed the gun and fired. The discharge struck Turner in the right chest and neck. Death was believed to have been instantaneous. Sheriff Cantrell said a charge of murder was placed against Grissom, as required by law. He was released under a $2,500 bond the following day. Funeral services for Turner were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Dibrell Church of Christ. Dr. J. C. Gaw and Rufe Higgins, minister of East End Church of Christ, officiated. Burial was in the Fuston Cemetery. Thomas Clark Turner was born in Warren County on March 7, 1914, and was a son of the late James Arthur and Mrs. Melvina Reeder Turner Myers. He was married the the former Opal Grissom Turner, who survives. In addition to his mother and widow, he leaves three brothers, John Turner of Nashville; Charlie Turner of Parsons; and Edwin Turner of Donalson; a sister, Mrs. Edna Adams of McMinnville; and a stepson, Thomas H.
