WATTS, James Floyd (circa 1957-1993)
Wreck injuries fatal to Watts
A Morrison Road man was killed Saturday evening when his truck left the roadway and struck a tree on Highway 108 just outside the McMinnville city limits. James (Jimmy) Floyd Watts, Jr., 36, died from multiple trauma, including massive head injuries, shortly after his arrival at River Park Hospital. His death occurred just after a LifeForce helicopter landed at the local facility to fly the victim to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga for emergency treatment. According to Highway Patrol accident reconstructionist Billy Prater, the fatal accident occurred at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Highway 108 about a half mile south of the city limits. A preliminary investigation of the accident scene revealed Watts; 1968 GMC pick-up was northbound in the direction of McMinnville when he apparently failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the right shoulder of the highway.
Prater said Watts' vehicle traveled approximately 226 feet in the right shoulder's ditch line before re-entering the roadway. The truck then traveled around 80 feet across the highway and entered the left shoulder of the road, traveling another 34 feet before striking a tree at the bottom of a slight embankment off the southbound shoulder. In total, Prater said the victim's truck traveled 340 from the point when he lost control. However, Prater noted no evidence was found that the victim ever attempted to use his brakes as no skid or yawl marks were located. While pointing out the long distance the truck traveled, Prater said excessive speed was probably not a factor in the fatality. But, Prater noted alcohol is believed to have played a role in the fatal crash. Watts was not wearing a seat belt. Following the crash, Watts was transported from the scene by Warren County Emergency Ambulance Service after approximately 15 minutes of extrication efforts as the front portion of the truck was literally crushed by its head-on impact with the tree.
Watts' death is the first traffic fatality recorded in Warren County this year. Ironically, this year's first fatality, which occurred on March 6, occurred almost one year to the day after 1992's first fatality which happened on March 7. In addition 1991's first vehicular accident which resulted in a fatality occurred on March 10.
A Warren County native, Jimmy Watts was a machinist at Bouldin and Lawson and a member of the Baptist Church. The son of Flossie Marie Myers Watts of McMinnville and the late James Floyd Watts, Sr., he is survived by his wife, Delores Dianne Watts; two daughters, Jamie Marie and Jessica Nicole Watts of McMinnville; one brother, Waymon Watts of McMinnville; three sisters, Barbara Ann Fults, Arlean Wright and Tama Watts, all of McMinnville; and by several nieces and nephews. Services were held yesterday at High's Chapel with Garvin Haley officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Zion Cemetery. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.Southern Standard, McMinnville, TN.
