Located at 2648 Cherokee Road, Johnson City, TN. It is overgrown, so it was hard to determine how many graves are present, but there was only one readable stone. According to the WCCL: "This cemetery was established about the time of the Civil War by Daniel Brummit. There are 4 graves. Daniel Brummit and his wife are buried there."
Brummit, Elizabeth; ? - died 9-18-1845 spouse D. Brummit
Additional Information:
Daniel Brummit was a son of David Brummit (1790-1834) and Anna N. Moreland Brummit (1821-1880) and the grandson of Samuel & Margaret Ann Brummit who came to Washington County, TN in 1790.
[Note: A Letter to the Editor ofWAGS BULLETIN from Edith Brumit Twilling, 1480 South Salt Pond, Marshall, MO 65430. (Vol. 17 (1): 46, 1988)
My sisters and I were researching in Washington County, Tennessee a few years ago and secured a map of the cemeteries in the county along with locations and a listing of legible headstones charted by the WPA in the 1930s.
The Brummit Cemetery, No. 51, lists Daniel Brummit as being buried with his wife Elizabeth in this family cemetery located on the family farm. This is a logical assumption, however, this Daniel lived for many more years than this cemetery was in use and moved to Saline County, MO where he died in 1878.
Elizabeth was Daniel Brumit's first wife whom he married in 1844. She died in 1845 and in 1846, he married Mary Ann Peoples, who died in 1848 and is buried in the Elliott Cemetery with her Peoples relatives. In 1849, Daniel Brumit married Louisa McAmis Stonecypher (previously married to Jacob Stonecypher) in Greene County, Tennessee. We do not know what became of this marriage or Jacob, but they had a son, Thomas A. Stonecypher, who was reared by Daniel and Louisa Brumit. We do not know what happened to Thomas after he was released from the Confederate Army in North Carolina in 1865.
Daniel and Louisa Brumit sold the family farm in Washington County, TN and moved to Saline County, MO in 1871, along with their 3 daughters and 1 son, Jacob Brumit. Thomas Stonecypher did not come to Missouri with them. Daniel and Louisa lived out their lives on the farm they purchased in Saline County, MO and are buried side by side in the Bethel Cemetery, located beside the Bethel Baptist Church in rural Saline Co., located 7 miles north of Slater, MO on Route C.
The "D. Brummit" listed in the directory is probably Daniel's father, David Brumit, who died in the early 1830s.
Of interest to us, and perhaps someone else, Daniel did marry a fourth time, Louisa died in 1873. In 1877, Daniel returned to Washington County, TN and married Elizabeth Scott, the widow of Absolum Scott who owned a neighboring farm to the Brumit's there. Daniel died in 1878 and Elizabeth returned to Washington County to make her home with her stepdaughter, Nancy Scott Brumit, who incidentally was the widow of Daniel Brumits youngest brother, Philip Brumit. Elizabeth, Nancy and Philip Brumit are buried at Speedwell Cemetery in Washington County.
We felt this error should be corrected regarding our grandparents as it certainly would be misleading to researchers.
Signed - Edith Brumit Twilling

Three Star State Historical Marker at the site of the Brush Creek Campground located at the corner of Watauga Avenue and Jackson Avenue in front of the Masonic Temple. There are impressions of graves located in front of the Masonic building. On September 2, 1811, James Nelson deeded to trustees William Nelson, William Duzan, James King, Jacob Hoss and John R. Boring, 4 acres and 8 poles to be used by the Methodist Episcopal church for a house of worship. For many years a campground for religious meeting was maintained here with a central permanent tent and many family tents. During the Civil War Col. Robert Love's 62nd NC Regiment, CSA, used the ground as a camp.
From Robert Young, Sr, Patriot and Pioneer by Dessie Little Simmons and Fred Simmons, c1984.
p. 371 After Lucretia's death, Joseph L. Young returned to TN and married 14 Sep 1848, Seraphina Jane Hoss (22 Dec 1823 - 20 Aug 1857), daughter of John Hoss and Sarah Adams Williams Hoss. Lucretia and Seraphina were cousins. Joseph and Seraphina Young moved to Catoosa Co., GA; however, they must have returned to the area of Washington Co. TN as Seraphina was buried Brushy Creek Camp Ground (now abandoned), which was located in the residential district of Johnson City, TN.
From History of Washington County, Tennessee, 1988 by the Watauga Association of Genealogists, 1988.
p. 25 About 1800 the Great Revival reached Washington County, with evangelistic meetings held at various sites for weeks at a time. Settlers came from miles away to attend these meetings, camping outdoors while the meeting lasted. The practice of camping resulted in the establishment of campgrounds. Two of these campgrounds became well known - the Brush Creek Campground (located in what is now Johnson City), and the campground at Sulphur Springs.
p. 81 In 1811 Brush Creek Campground was established on donated land in present-day Johnson City, extending from what is now the corner of Boone Street and Unaka Avenue southwestward to Market Street. These camp meetings served to increase Church membership, but were also occasions for families from the various communities to meet each other and exchange news.
p. 180 The name South Watauga continued unofficially until about 1805 when James Nelson, son of William, gave "4 acres and 8 poles" on Brush Creek to the Methodist Society (Bishop Francis Asbury) for the purpose of a church which was also used for educational purposes. This land was located on the present 300 block of West Watauga Avenue. The Brush(y) Creek Camp Ground flourished for more than half a century.
From History of Washington County, Tennessee compiled and edited by Joyce and W. Eugene Cox, 2001.
p.222 Probably one of the last civil cases stemming directly from the war was instituted by the Methodist Church South to regain possession of the Brush Creek Campground from the Northern Methodists. The suit would not be resolved until after it went all the way to the Supreme Court of Tennessee resulting in a victory for the Southern Methodists.
