HARRIS (BENJAMIN) CEMETERY

Located 2 1/2 miles west of Jonesborough, just below the old Lyle home and above Woodland Lake. There is no trace of the cemetery [2002], and the marker placed by the DAR has been removed. Information from the late Mary Hardin McCown.

[In 2002, the old Lyle home was a white brick house that has just about fallen down. Woodland Lake was a swimming pool which was located where Davy Crockett High School is located today.]

Benjamin Harris, Rev. War

NOTE: His wife is also buried here -- see will of son, John C., who is buried at Uriel Cemetery. CMB

From Washington County Tennessee Wills 1777-1872 by Goldene Burgner,

p.40: Father Ragans grave to be finished and my father and mothers grave on the old place to be walled as I have directed at the expense of my estate.

The Washington County Check List: On Ellis Butler farm. This cemetery is in the garden just back of the house. Benjamin Harris was a Revolutionary Soldier, and his grave is being marked by the Sara Hawkins Chapter, NSDAR. Benjamin was born 1742, died 1820; his wife, Jane Crampton Harris, born 1746, died 1828 is buried in this plot, and also a sister of hers; there are also slaves buried here. Mr. Butler who lives on the place, and whose family has owned the farm more than 80 years, says there are suppose to be 11 graves.

Information furnished by Mrs. Margaret H. Richardson of Morristown, Tenn., a descendant of Benjamin Harris.

From the Washington County Tennessee Tombstone Inscriptions by Charles M. Bennett and the Watauga Association of Genealogists Bulletin, Vol. II, p.2 with permission from Loriane B. Rae.

All of this was on Elizabeth L. Hale's tombstone:
Her last letter

Dear Mother and all the rest of the Family. I drop these few lines to let you know that I am no better [?] days I will be a little better and others worse. Mother I don't know but I have no hopes of ever being any better in this world. Mother, I am praying the debt that you all have to pay we all have to suffer and die and if we are ready Oh how sweet it will be. Mother I feel that I am traveling home. Just as time can move, to that home sweet home where pain in death never shall enter.

Photographed, transcribed and donated to the Washington County TNGen Web Site, 31 December 2003 by Betty Jane Hylton, Dawn Peters, Chester Willis, Bob Shell and Donna Briggs. Posted 11 Sep 2007, MWH.

Additional Information:

In 1960, Charles Bennett transcribed this cemetery and found the same two stones. His information is as follows:

John B. Hartman, Co I Tenn Cav (Family records say he was b 1829, d 1902)

Henry Hartman, June 22, 1785 -- March 31, 1838 (family records state he was b 22 Jun 1784) He indicated that the discrepancy in dates could have been his mistake.

NOTES:

Henry Hartman married Polly Brown in 1806. He was the son of Joseph Hartman (1753-1831) and wife, Mary Henley (1747-1834). Polly was born 28 Dec 1784 and died in 1860. She is probably buried here, too. Henry Hartman was a soldier in the War of 1812. Henry and Polly were the parents of John B. who married Jane Holmes on 17 Mar 1850. Matilda Hartman (5 or 15 Mar 1809 &endash; 1 Jul 1890) was the daughter of Henry and Polly, and second wife of Richard Humphreys. She is supposed to be buried here. Richard Humphreys is buried at Mount Zion with his first wife.

HARTSELL (ISAAC) PROPERTY CEMETERY

The cemetery is located on Louise Harrell's property, 113 Oliver Edwards Road, Jonesborough, TN. It is approximately 100 x 140 feet covered in vinca vine. GPS Location: 36.14.177N 082.26.493W; Elevation: 1469 feet.

Only two markers of fieldstones remain. One has an inscription:
