Located 2 1/2 miles west of Jonesborough, just below the old Lyle home and above Woodland Lake. There is no trace of the cemetery [2002], and the marker placed by the DAR has been removed. Information from the late Mary Hardin McCown. [In 2002, the old Lyle home was a white brick house that has just about fallen down. Woodland Lake was a swimming pool which was located where Davy Crockett High School is located today.]
NOTE: His wife is also buried here -- see will of son, John C., who is buried at Uriel Cemetery. CMB From Washington County Tennessee Wills 1777-1872 by Goldene Burgner,
The Washington County Check List: On Ellis Butler farm. This cemetery is in the garden just back of the house. Benjamin Harris was a Revolutionary Soldier, and his grave is being marked by the Sara Hawkins Chapter, NSDAR. Benjamin was born 1742, died 1820; his wife, Jane Crampton Harris, born 1746, died 1828 is buried in this plot, and also a sister of hers; there are also slaves buried here. Mr. Butler who lives on the place, and whose family has owned the farm more than 80 years, says there are suppose to be 11 graves. Information furnished by Mrs. Margaret H. Richardson of Morristown, Tenn., a descendant of Benjamin Harris. From the Washington County Tennessee Tombstone Inscriptions by Charles M. Bennett and the Watauga Association of Genealogists Bulletin, Vol. II, p.2 with permission from Loriane B. Rae. |
