MAUK CEMETERY

Located just off the Bill Mauk Road in the first district of Washington County.
GPS location: 36. 09.70N 082.36.02W
The cemetery is about 1200 feet off 318 Bill Mauk Road on property now owned by Grace J. Mauk and Chester Broyles. There is a fence thorough the middle of the cemetery. Wm. J. Mauk, born in 1910, now deceased, told stories about the cemetery. He said when he was a boy, many people in this settlement, which has been known as Mauktown, were buried there. However his immediate family is buried at the Liberty Cemetery about three or four miles away.

From the sunken places on the site, there could possibly have been thirty or forty graves. There are several large limestone rocks scattered on the ground, but no inscriptions were found. The entire area was thickly covered by what is referred to as "grave vine." It is a ground cover that stays green all year.

In addition to the names listed below, there could be some Broyles settlers, ancestors of Chester Broyles, buried there.

MAUK, Abraham, son of Samuel and Polly Broyles Mauk.
MAUK, James, son of Samuel and Mary Broyles Mauk.
MAUK, Malinda Templin, wife of James Mauk.
MAUK, Nancy J. Broyles, wife of Samuel A. Mauk.
MAUK, Samuel, son of John and Elizabeth Heiser Mauk. Soldier in the War of 1812.
MAUK, Samuel M. born July 28, 1848, son of James and Malinda Templin Mauk.

SEATON, Rebecca Mauk, daughter of James and Malinda Templin Mauk. Wife of Jacob Marion Seaton.

Additional Information:

p. III A-17 -- Samuel Mauk, born in 1790, married in 1811, Mary (Polly) Broyles, born in 1795, in Greene Co., Tenn., a daughter of James B. and Ellender Broyles. Samuel built the first cold blast furnace on the Nolachuckey River in Washington Co., Tenn. A town grew up in that vicinity and was called Mauktown. In 1901 the town was washed away in a flood. Samuel died May 7, 1876, and Mary died in 1865. They had eleven children.

p. III A-21 -- James M. Mauk, born February 5, 1816, married in Washington Co., Tenn. September 21, 1843, Malinda Templin, born April 18, 1825, daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Brown Templin. They had eleven children.

p. III A-21 -- Rebecca Jane Mauk, born September 3, 1844, married in Washington Co., Tenn. November 8, 1860, Jacob Marion Seaton, born August 26, 1832, son of David and Alice Green Seaton. Rebecca died January 29, 1884, and Jacob died May 7, 1812. They had eleven children.

p. III A-25 -- Samuel M. Mauk, born July 28, 1848, married January 4, 1872, Nancy J. Broyles, born May 22, 1852. Samuel died May 28, 1929, and Nancy died April 1, 1930. They had three children.

p. III A-27 -- Abraham Mauk, born August 25, 1823, died unmarried in 1847.

This cemetery is located about four miles directly South of Jonesboro. It is about one quarter mile East of Highway 81 between Jonesboro and Erwin. The farm on which it is located was sold by Henry McCray to David Thomas of Sullivan County on October 28, 1822. On Dec. 5, 1850, Mary C. Thomas married Samuel May. On Jan. 7, 1857, David Thomas sold the farm to his son-in-law, Samuel May. This cemetery has perhaps had as many as seventy burials, most of them marked with plain fieldstones or unmarked. Located on East Market Street near Broadway in the Keystone section of Johnson City. Only a few broken stones are still on the site. Two nearby gardens have rock edgings which look suspiciously like broken grave markers. Coped by Robert McGinnis and Loraine Bennett Rae, May 1976.

O. (?) E. (?) Meadows, Nov. 1848-Dec 1872

WCCL: There are only 12 graves in this plot, and it evidently was abandoned soon after the Meadows family was buried here. This graveyard was started by Emanuel Meadows. His wife, Mrs. Pheelander Meadows is also buried here. His son, John and Mr. E. Meadows' second wife are also buried here. This family came from Virginia.

In her book on the Little family, Dessie Simmons says that John Little, son of John and Elizabeth Carr Little, 1806-1862 was buried here, on what was at one time Little property. She said there was only one stone there now, M.C. Collins. Robert and I did not find that stone. LBR.

MILLER (GEORGE W.) CEMETERY

Located on Knob Creek Road, between Knob Creek Brethren Church and State of Franklin Road intersection, Johnson City, TN.
GPS location: 36.20.32N 082.24.22W

The land on which the Miller Cemetery is now located was a part of the George W. Miller farm. He had started this as the burial place for his descendants and his relatives. The cemetery was set up prior to the Civil War; and no doubt George W. Miller's first wife, Sarah Loudermilk Miller, who died c1858, was the first person to be buried there - grave unmarked. George W. Miller, his sister, Margaret Miller Little, his brother, James Madison Miller and their husband/wives, children and grand children make up the majority of those buried there. There is reason to believe George W. Miller's father, Henry, Sr. [died 20 Sep1863] and his brother, Lafayette Miller are also buried there in unmarked graves.

MILLER (PETER) CEMETERY

Located on the farm, on a hill approximately 75 feet south of the railroad on Green Pond Rd., Jonesborough, TN. The field has been graded and no signs of a cemetery are left.

Information taken from Ancestral Sketches, by Le Roy Reeves, J.P. Bell Company, Lunchburg, Virginia, 1951.

Peter Miller (Mueller) married about 1773 to Elizabeth Bohun in Frederick (now Carroll) County, Maryland. When Peter Miller reached Washington County is not clear. In 1788, by deed which referred to the parties as farmers of Washington County, he purchased from John McMahan 200 acres of land in the Indian Ridge section. He probably lived on this land until he purchased in 1797 from James Ryan 258 acres of land "on the head spring of Nobb Creek," which we know to have been his final home. This lay about halfway between the present Johnson City and Jonesboro, and on both sides of the location of the present Southern Railway track and the Johnson City-Jonesboro highway which there run near each other.

Peter Miller died about 1824. He was buried on the farm, on a hill just south of the later constructed railroad, as were probably other of the family. A faithful slave, Digo the elder, who survived him, was at his own request buried at his feet. With his great-grandson, James P. McNeil, I visited the place about 1913. It was in an open space in the edge of a wood. A considerable number of gravestones were standing, all of rough limestone without inscription. No grave could be identified. Mr. McNeil then stated that soldiers had been buried there during the old war; of which army I do not remember. I visited the place again in 1947. Mr. McNeil had been gathered to his fathers, and I found it with difficulty. One single stone was standing and another was seen lying prone in the thick coating of dead leaves.
