Jacob Miller, Sr. m. Hannah Broyles, 28 Jun 1845

NOTE - CMB: by Bedford Co, VA Wills, Dated June 16, 1777, Henry Taylor (Tayler) mentions the "land whereon we Christopher and I now lives" -- so he may have been buried in this cemetery. He names his wife Sarah, sons Christopher, Skelton, William and John, and daus. Lannah (Zannah, Sannah ?), Sarah, Sherlot, Rachel Richason, Elizabeth Richason and Cloy Rundfro.

Christopher Taylor m. Mary Edwards; Sarah Cantrell's will of Nov 4, 1783, Bedford Co. VA, makes it evident that Mary was dau. by her first marriage to an Edwards.

Hannah was the dau. of Christopher's son Henry, who m. Delilah Demoss. Henry d. ca 1856; Delilah, b. Sept 3, 1776, d. June 16, 1869. It is possible that they are buried in this plot since both his father and their daughter are here. Hannah seems to have had at least two children by Cyrus Broles: Abraham T. b Nov 1, 1839 and Samuel N. b July 22, 1841, as they are mentioned in the Bible of Jacob Miller, Sr. In his will, Henry mentions his wife Delilah and "my four children" - sons, Abraham and Skelton, and daus, Polly Barkley and Hannah Miller.

Abstracted from History of Washington County Tennessee, 1988 by Watauga Association of Genealogists, p.511.

Christopher Taylor, son of Henry and Sarah Taylor, was born 1746 in Bedford County, Virginia. He married 1768 Mary Edwards. The Taylors settled (1774-76) on 205 acres of land on Limestone Creek in Washington County, Tennessee. They built a two-story log house that stands today in the historical district of Jonesborough.

According to Capt. Taylor's Revolutionary War record, he served (1776) with Capt. Erwin, Col. Christian, and Col. John Sevier against the Cherokee Indians who were in league with the British and he served as Captain under Sevier at the Battle of King's mountain. Capt. Taylor was present at the surrender of the British Capt. De Peyster. later, Taylor represented Washington County in the first legislature for the State of Franklin.

Capt. Taylor died 10 Sept 1833 in Washington County, Tennessee and was buried at the Taylor homestead. His grave is marked. Mary Edwards Taylor drew a widow's pension until her death 29 March 1837.

Leeroy Taylor - John Campbell House

This house was originally a log cabin. While it has long been known as the John Campbell house, it is on land once belonging to Leeroy Taylor and at least one well-informed local historian believed the house was built by Leeroy Taylor. Over the years additions have been made to the original building until now the log cabin is entirely surrounded by added rooms, but with the logs still visible in some rooms. It has been occupied by descendants of John Campbell for several generations with a descendant, Mrs. Jo Campbell Keys, now residing there. The house is located at the end of a lane leading into Muddy Fork Road about a mile from Leesburg. Leeroy Taylor's son, William, is buried beside Muddy Fork Road near its intersection with Fairview Road.

p.192:

... A single grave, that of William Taylor, is located beside Muddy Fork Road near Leesburg Presbyterian Church.

No markers remain in the cemetery. A utility pole sits in the middle of the cemetery. Only one tombstone remains. Residents say that the others were borrowed for a Halloween party by someone across the river and never returned. The only surviving marker is in a yard at a nearby house.

in memory of
MELINDA TYLER
born november 1/7 18??
died august 28, 18??
aged 17 years 12 mo. 23 days

The following from Washington County Tennessee Tombstone Inscriptions, by Charles M. Bennett and the Watauga Association of Genealogists, Vol. II, p. 216, used with permission from Loraine B. Rae.

Located on the John Sevier farm, which was bought from him by William Tyler. It is about half way between Conklin and Jackson's Bridge. Copied by Mary Hardin McCown April 3, 1937 and by Mrs. McCown and Belle Tilden on March 20, 1959; copied by Charles M. Bennett, March 27, 1960 and by Mildred Brittain in the 1960s.

1. Child's grave

2. (The following looks as if they may be the same):

Melinda Tyler, b. Nov 7, 1815, d Aug 8 ____, aged 77 y (MHM)
Mahala Tyler, Nov 1, 18__ - Aug 28, 1943 (?), 17 y 9 m 27 d (CMB)

3. "Our Father" William Tyler, Aug 5, 1813 &endash; Jan 12, 1898

(1st wfe bur. Mt. Wesley Cem. MHM)

NOTES:

Mrs. McCown's 1937 copy has one grave between the child's and the 2nd grave and three following Wm. Tyler's grave.

WCCL: Established by the Sevier family and has 8 graves. This is an old private cemetery. It is in bad condition, having grown over with weeds and vines. It is not known how long it has been abandoned. The cemetery has four field stones.

CMB: Only four stones were visible, two beyond legibility. LBR: At another place in his files I found that Samuel Sherrill, who died ca 1800 was buried in the Sherrill Cem., later known as the Tyler Cem. At Jackson Bridge. I'm assuming this is the same cemetery.

MMB: Members of the John Sevier and William Tyler families, and maybe other, buried here. Stones have been destroyed. I found Wm. Tyler's (the only one reported) propped against a walnut tree by the side of the road.

Washington County, Tennessee History, 1988, by the Watauga Association of Genealogists, p. 484:

The April 15, 1803 diary entry is "Came home to Plum Grove. A rainy day. Found all well."

Wed. April 20, 1803, "We all went to Jonesboro. Allen Gillespie sold my Plum Grove plantation as late marshall of East Tennessee. John Nelson bid off same at 2,266 2/3 dollars, paid 1,500 dollars down and give his bond for 1.166 2/3 dollars payable 25 Nov. next, which bond I have assigned to Elizabeth Carter and taken her receipt. Myself and Mrs. Sevier rode up to Mrs. Carter's. Tarried all night."

On June 7, 1804, Robert Hays, late marshall of Tennessee district, conveyed Plum Grove to William Tyler by writ of fiere facias in U.S. District Court on the first Monday of July 1800. James Patton of Virginia , assignee, had recovered against John Sevier in the sum of $1,337.16. The deed notes William Tyler's bid was $1,500 for for the 263 1/2 acres on the north side of the NolichuckyÉ being the same on which said John Sevier lately dwelt.

The Washington County Historical Society is trying to get the Plum Grove site recognized for its historical value. The Tyler Cemetery is adjacent to the foundation of John Sevier's home. Hopefully the other tombstones can be recovered and the cemetery restored.

Additional Information:

On April 2, 1990, Elaine Cantrell and Martha Jones counted 41 tombstones. However, it is known that there are many more graves; the cemetery is filled with large fieldstones marking grave sites. Some of the tombstones are so old that the writing is almost impossible to read. Due to the age of the gravestones some dates, spellings and etc. may be slightly different from previous recordings.

In 1811 Jeremiah Reagan and his wife, Abigail, set aside the land for a church and graveyard. The church is no longer around. Reagan died that same year; it is believed his wife is buried beside him. In 1934 a marker for the Reagan graves was placed there by the John Sevier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Reagan was born in 1735 in Pennsylvania.

One interesting tombstone - Rev. George Eakin. On this stone is written: "Born in Tyrone Co., Ireland, May 23, 1782 Died in Abingdon, Va., in his 75th year." Beginning as a Wesleyan lay preacher at 16 years of age, he was an active preacher for 58 years. He received into the church during his 34 years, an average of 385 members per year or 13,000 souls. His wife, Mary, and a son, George, also have tombstones beside his.

John Crampton Harris stone reads: "Here lie the Rev. and Dr. John Crampton Harris born Sept. 10, 1773 and died Sept. 9, 1842, the son of Benjamin Harris III and Jane Crampton; and his beloved wife, Sarah Anne Harrison Regan, born Oct. 19, 1781 and died 1878, the daughter of Jeremiah Reagan and Abigail Harrison. J. C. Harris was a direct descendant of Capt. Thomas Harris, a member of the original Virginia Company, who was the son of Sir William Harris of Crisxe, Essex, England. Abigail Harrison was the direct descendant of Isaiah Harrison who came to Oyster Bay, Long Island, from Ireland in 1687. This memorial is placed here with love, by their great, great, great grandsons: John Edward Helms III, Rev. William O'keefe Helms, and Dr. Crampton Harris Helms, Nov. 30, 1996. "

Edna H. Harris' husband, Dr. A. N. Harris, is buried in Kingston, Georgia. (Born in Jonesborough June 15, 1815 and died in GA November 6, 1868). Although there are no stones, it is known that five children of Edna & A. N. Harris are buried in Uriel next to their mother's grave. They are:
Alexander Nelson Harris July 18, 1853 - Apr. 18, 1888
Rhoda Emma Harris Feb. 4, 1885 - Nov. 17, 1878
David Haynes Harris Feb. 8, 1857 - Nov. 28, 1881
Sallie Angelina Broyles June 2, 1847 - June 24, 1877
Matthew Napoleon Harris Sept. 22, 1862 - March 15, 1891
[Two other children: Joseph Allison Harris & Mollie Lavinia Miller have markers & are listed in this record.]

There is no marker other than a fieldstone, but it is known that Juliet M. Harris' mother, Frances McCrary, is buried next to her grave.
