BARR

Lonnie Elrod  Thur Oct 29 7:41am 1998
I am looking for info on John BARR who is listed in the 1820 White County Census. It shows him having in his household 3 male and 4 female children under the age of 10 as well as 1 female between 26-45. I believe he could be my g-g-g-g-g-grandfather. A ll that is known is that he was born in NC in 1788, his son William was born in 1811, and before William had his son Jacob in 1832, the family had moved to White County, TN. I believe this means that the BARR family moved from NC to White County between 1811 (when William was born) and 1832 (when Jacob was born in White County). Does anyone have any info on this BARR line?

KNOWLES

KNOWLES. My husband's ancestors where the KNOWLES family of White Co., headed by Irishman John W. KNOWLES, b 1749, d 1838, bd Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. My query specifically involves this cemetery which adjoins Mt. Pisgah Church. Could anyone tell me the origin of the unusual style of stone slab grave markers in this cemetery? Countless graves (indeed, the majority) are marked by large rectangular stone slabs leaning at an angle against each other at the tops, forming a triangle with the ground below. Mos t have upright stone markers standing in front with identifying name-date info. I have never seen these stone slab markers in any other cemetery in our nation, although the style is similar in some ways to a style used in some parts of Ireland. When I vis ited Sparta about 6 years ago, Mt. Pisgah's pastor did not have an answer. If anyone knows why this particular cemetery used this particular marker --- and in such large numbers, I would greatly enjoy hearing the explanation. Many thanks! Marcia.

SIMPSON, CALF KILLER

Will T. Hale's book, "History of DeKalb County, Tennessee mentions on page 5 that until 1805 a part of the Cumberland Mountains was an Indian reserve known as the Wilderness. As late as 1791 Nettle Carrier, an Indian chief, lived there with his tribesmen. About 1800 a band of Cherokees, under the lead of Chief CALF KILLER had their homes in present day White County.
