Richard Simpson, 8th child of Jesse and Mary, of Va. , was a
Presbyterian minister. He wore a long frock coat and tall hat. He was
a wealthy man and owned several slaves, land, and other property. The
slaves did the farming. The 1870 census shows names of slaves who
remained in his home after they had been freed: Mariah(black), mother
and son, Mason(black), Edward(mulatta), Frank(mulatta). Moriah had
also one boy named Richard, a girl named 'Sal'; perhaps others, but
at the time of the 1870 census, the "others" were not in the Simpson
household. Mariah, at the time a mother of a baby herself, also
wet-nursed Martha 'Mattie' Arminda Simpson, when her mother Amy
Arminda died. Amy Arminda was Richard's 3rd wife.Various family
members recall that Mariah was bought for $800 dollars when she was
just 16 years old and that she and her family took the name Simpson.
Possibly some of her descendents still live in White Co, TN. Mariah
was born in Ga., but is believed to have died in White Co. TN, in
Oct. of 1919. I'm looki
